New Delhi, March 14, 2012: Nikon India, the 100% subsidiary of Nikon Corporation, leaders in imaging technology, announced the new Nikon FX-format camera D4 that serves as the new flagship model in Nikon’s lineup of digital-SLR cameras. Nikon India also announced the highly anticipated D800, engineered to provide extreme resolution, astounding image quality and valuable video features optimized for professional still and multimedia photographers and videographers.
Considered the new Nikon flagship, the D4 renders supreme image quality, a feat accomplished with a new 16.2-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor, coupled with the latest generation of Nikon’s EXPEED 3 image processing engine to help produce images and videos with stunning clarity and color. Every aspect of the new Nikon D4 D-SLR has been designed to emphasize rapid response and seamless operation to help professional photographers consistently capture incredible content. Nikon’s proven 51-point AF System has been further enhanced for maximum speed in a variety of challenging shooting situations, even at 10 frames per second (fps). The Nikon D4 is engineered for the modern professional and incorporates never before seen HD-SLR video features for those who also need to capture multimedia content from the field. Photographers are also able to shoot in even the most challenging environments and lighting conditions with the assistance of Nikon’s new 91,000-pixel 3D color matrix meter and a broad ISO range from 100 to a staggering 204,800 for low-light capture like never before.
The D800, a new FX-format model, offers an overwhelming 36.3-million pixels as well as a variety of value-adding functions, available in a compact and lightweight body.
In addition to a new Nikon FX-format CMOS image sensor and the new EXPEED 3 image-processing engine – specifically optimized for Nikon digital SLR cameras – the D800 is equipped with a new 91K-pixel (approximately 91,000 pixels) RGB sensor that supports the Advanced Scene Recognition System; which offers overwhelmingly advanced scene recognition performance. The camera is also equipped with a number of new functions, including Dual Image-Area Full HD D-Movie that let users’ record movies using either the FX-based movie format or the DX-based movie format.
Speaking at the launch occasion, Mr. Hiroshi Takashina, Managing Director, Nikon India said, “Our latest offering is a landmark achievement in the industry and we are proud to bring these revolutionary cameras to India. Nikon’s vision is to expand the photography culture in this country and we believe that our latest offerings will help us to take this initiative many steps ahead. The D4 and D800 have been the most anticipated D-SLRs of the season. They have been developed with technology and reliability that best responds to the severe demands of professional photography. Both these cameras are a result of our understanding of what the consumers really seek and thus creating the most advanced and anticipated cameras of the time.”
“At this pride moment, I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr. Raghu Rai – one of India’s premier photographers on board - to the Nikon India family,” for supporting us in realizing our dream of enhancing the photo culture of this rich nation. he added.
In addition to the D800, Nikon has released a supplementary model for those professionals who demand higher resolution and D-SLR versatility; the D800E. This model treads in medium format territory for studio work or landscape photography when there is no exception to only the highest fidelity and sharpness. This unique alternative model effectively enhances the resolution characteristics of the 36.3-megapixel CMOS sensor by doing away with the anti-aliasing properties of the OLPF inside the camera. By doing this, light is delivered directly to the photodiodes, yielding an image resulting from the raw light gathering properties of the camera.
D4 Development background
In 2007, Nikon released the D3 digital-SLR camera as its flagship model equipped with the new FX-format CMOS image sensor developed by Nikon. With its new image sensor, the D3 established a new level of image quality, speed, and support for high sensitivities. In December of 2008, Nikon released the D3X with an effective pixel count of 24.5-million pixels, which enabled superior imaging performance equal to that possible with medium format cameras. In the following year, the D3S proposed new possibilities in imaging expression with its expanded range of standard sensitivities from ISO 200 to ISO 12800 and a built-in movie recording function. The superior performance of the Nikon D3 was recognized with three of the most prestigious domestic and international awards—Japan’s Camera Grand Prix Camera of the Year and Europe’s Technical Image Press Association’s (TIPA) Best D-SLR Professional and the European Imaging and Sound Association’s (EISA) Professional Camera of the Year. The D3X and D3S continued the success of the series introduced with the D3, being recognized by the camera industry for their superior performance with a number of awards of their own as well as extreme popularity with professional and advanced amateur photographers alike. In addition, the superior durability and reliability of the cameras has also been recognized by NASA, which ordered several models as-is, with no special modification, that are currently used aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Nikon based development of the flagship D4 on the basic performance achieved with the D3 series, which has led the industry in imaging expression since its release. In addition to this high level of basic performance, a number of new functions and features were added in response to the needs and demands of professional and advanced amateur photographers, resulting in this next-generation digital-SLR camera that stretches the boundaries of functionality and performance with superior versatility.
