SERVICE ADVISORY FOR NIKON F6 SLR CAMERA OWNERS
[ 15 JULY 2020 ]
Thank you for choosing Nikon for your photographic needs.
It has come to our attention during an audit based on Nikon's own product environmental standards that a part containing levels of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) that potentially exceed the standard value specified in the RoHS Directive* has been used in some F6 film SLR cameras produced and/or placed on the market after 22 July 2019.
*The RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU and 2015/863/EU) originated in the European Union to restrict the use of certain hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products. Since 22 July 2019, the use of DBP in electrical and electronic products is restricted and standard values apply.
Nikon will replace the part in the affected products as needed free of charge to the customer, even if the warranty has expired.
Summary of the issue
Nikon controls the use of certain hazardous materials in its products in accordance with the European Union's RoHS Directive. Our suppliers provide us with information detailing the chemical substances contained in the parts they supply. Such information regarding the part described here indicated that they were compliant with the RoHS Directive.
However, a recent internal audit found that the levels of dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which has been regulated by the RoHS Directive since 22 July 2019, used in the certain internal camera part is likely to exceed the standard value set in the RoHS Directive.
Response
Shipments of the affected product were suspended as soon as our internal audit identified the lack of compliance with the RoHS Directive. These cameras exhibit no issues or problems in terms of product quality, function, or performance. Further, as their regular use will in no way compromise the user's health or well-being, customer may continue to use their camera without concern. Nikon will however, replace the affected part upon request.
Preventive actions
In response to this finding, employees of all Nikon Group companies will be retrained on the EU's RoHS Directive. We will also strengthen our inspection process, and instruct and better manage suppliers with regard to the RoHS Directive in an effort to prevent issues like this from occurring again in the future.
